3 Common Causes for Ant Infestation

Ants are the most common household pest. They enter your home in search of food and shelter. However, there has to be something alluring to the ants that make them want to move in your home.

The most common reason for an ant infestation is the ant’s search for food. Therefore, if you leave food sitting out, leave dirty dishes in the sink, or your floor could double as a buffet for the ants – they are not going to go away! Ants will eat almost anything however, some of their favorite foods include the following:

  • Starchy foods
  • Sweet foods
  • Greasy substances

The ants also enjoy plants and wood, which we will get to in a minute.

An interior infestation of ants includes the whole colony of ants creating a nest inside your home instead of just dropping by for food. Ants build solid and permanent nests in walls, behind walls, door frames, under your windowsills, inside the cabinets and behind your appliances.

Bushes and Plants to Close to the House

If you have bushes and plants or even tall grass that is touching your homes foundation or even siding, it is not a far leap for the ants to find even the smallest of cracks or holes and make their way inside. Ants often use plants as a source of food and shelter, so why do they come inside your house? They like the food on the counter better and it’s warmer or cooler in your home. When planting bushes and plants make sure there is a foot or so between your home and the plant life.

Moist, Decaying Wood

Carpenter ants (larger and harder to get rid of then your standard little ant) make their shelter out moist wood or decaying wood – if the wood is moist and decaying, they have a mansion! A common misunderstanding is that carpenter ants eat the wood, they do not eat it – they chew it away to build their nests and tunnels through the walls.

If you see ants in your home especially carpenter ants call a pest control company, because carpenter ants can destroy your home.
