Spring is in the air which is normally a great thing for those of us who live in parts of the country where the mercury drops from November to February and everything goes from green to gray quickly. But that's in the rearview mirror. The sunshine is coming back and the greenery is starting to show.
All good, right? Well, not always.
With the end of winter and start of warmer weather comes one of the worst pests that any home or business can endure: the carpenter ant.
Carpenter ants work in a colony and can infest and destroy any wood, if left untreated. That is why it is important to be able to spot the evidence of a carpenter ant infestation.
Here are some signs to look for:
- The most obvious sign is to see the ants throughout your home or business. Though that may not mean an infestation is in place, this is the easiest and quickest sign an individual notices. Most are found near a food source which can be anything from actual food to the remains of another insect.
- A more legit sign of infestation is when an individual starts to find small piles of wood shavings underneath and around wooden items as that is where the carpenter ants will nest and destroy.
- If you notice wood shavings near wooden items, try to listen near the item for a faint rustling noise of the ants doing their work.
- Last and most obvious sign is when larged winged ants start to emerge around the home or business. They can appear from the ceilings, walls and other areas around the structure and is a sure sign of infestation.
